Top 7 hostels in Milan/Italy
It was the year 2017 when I have visited Milan in Italy for the first time. I had a free flight ticket to this destination, still, I was very careful to choose the right accommodation. Due to my previous student’s jobs in a hotel, I have become a kind of crazy about staying in a hotel or hostel. I love it – I love the traveling atmosphere all around me, I love ho(s)tel breakfast, I love the rooms, other travelers – I always enjoy it from the first moment.
So, choosing the right hostel for me was a challenge, I spend some time searching and comparing hostels on Booking.com (my favorite booking platform). Where I am staying has been always based on which destination and with whom I am traveling. This time I was a solo traveler so I was a little bit worried so I can enjoy the weekend only on my own.
In the end, I was happy to pick the best hostel I have ever stayed in! And did I feel alone in Milan? Not for a minute! I have met great people in the hostel. My room-mates – people from different parts of the world, were so kind and thoughtful – there was simply no space for feeling lonely during my stay.
Also, I have to admit this experience made me really excited and gave me the courage to travel as a solo traveler more. Start with picking some nice hostel based on my feeling, intuition, and former visitors references and enjoy my stay without the fear of feeling lonely, solve problems lonely (this is silly as I know language, I am capable to organize everything, also I became less shy on trying new things and meeting new people due to this experience) – so there was no reason to feel weird just for being a solo traveler. In fact, it started to be the way how I prefer to travel abroad, to be honest.
Now, let me introduce Ostello Bello Grande near Stazione Centrale. Don’t panic – there is another Ostello Bello in the center of Milan, however, I have visited this one near the train station and I have done a great choice – although the central one is evaluated even better, I absolutely do not regret this choice.
After my arrival at this hostel, I got a free drink – I have picked Cappuccino. Due to my love for Italy, there was no other option for me, although it was already after 1 pm (those who know Italians are probably aware they only drink Cappuccino in the morning, oops – sorry, but I am not Italian and I do not regret my choice).
I have picked the mixed 4-Bed Dormitory room with a half pension, which was very practical for me. Some of you may think it is a pity to have breakfast and even dinner in the hostel when there is a lot of great restaurants and cafés in Milan, but I have done this trip in saving mode, so let‘s consider it this way. You can definitely choose breakfast only, no worries. Both – breakfast and dinner were sufficient, I was very surprised at the dinner as it was classic Italian food (pasta, lasagna, pizza, etc.), very tasty, I did not miss anything and as a plus, I have met interesting people during enjoying the dinner.
When I am talking about saving mode – the accommodation itself was not such cheap, especially when there were breakfast and dinner included, the room had a private bathroom as well, so no wonder. Still, I had the feeling the price absolutely fits the service, comfort, and meal I have received during my stay. I did not regret the money spend on this accommodation, I assure you.
I have not taken my laptop with me and in case of need, they borrow me theirs – I have to admit this is a great service and each hostel should offer this option.
Breakfast, as well as dinner, was sufficient and tasty, as Italy always offer. I did not have any problem during my whole stay and the location becomes very convenient due to my later trip to Bologna.
In relation to the bed and comfort – there was nothing to be pointed out – beds were very comfy, there was plenty of space to store luggage and keep them safe.
What was a big plus – as it is near Stazione Centrale, you only do few steps to get to the train station – so if you are tired of discovering Milan, you can take the train and go e.g. to Bologna, Venice, Verona, Florence – everything is so close!
From this point of view, it is Milan’s very convenient place for starting discovering Italy, even to Rome you can get in 3,5 hours by train! If you are not aware where to find and buy ticket, there is staff in the Stazione Centrale ready to help you buy those in the automat or you can purchase tickets in advance trough e.g. Omio.com (I recommend buying the tickets in advance as they could be more cheaper – as earlier you buy it, as cheaper they are!).
I have done my trip to Bologna and it definitely worths the price. So at one weekend only I have discovered Milan and Bologna, realized how fantastic trains Italy offers and started to plan another trip to Pisa and Florence.
