Top 7 hostels in Milan/Italy

It was the year 2017 when I have visited Milan in Italy for the first time. I had a free flight ticket to this destination, still, I was very careful to choose the right accommodation. Due to my previous student’s jobs in a hotel, I have become a kind of crazy about staying in a hotel or hostel. I love it – I love the traveling atmosphere all around me, I love ho(s)tel breakfast, I love the rooms, other travelers – I always enjoy it from the first moment.

So, choosing the right hostel for me was a challenge, I spend some time searching and comparing hostels on (my favorite booking platform). Where I am staying has been always based on which destination and with whom I am traveling. This time I was a solo traveler so I was a little bit worried so I can enjoy the weekend only on my own.

In the end, I was happy to pick the best hostel I have ever stayed in! And did I feel alone in Milan? Not for a minute! I have met great people in the hostel. My room-mates – people from different parts of the world, were so kind and thoughtful – there was simply no space for feeling lonely during my stay.

Ostello bello grande

Also, I have to admit this experience made me really excited and gave me the courage to travel as a solo traveler more. Start with picking some nice hostel based on my feeling, intuition, and former visitors references and enjoy my stay without the fear of feeling lonely, solve problems lonely (this is silly as I know language, I am capable to organize everything, also I became less shy on trying new things and meeting new people due to this experience) – so there was no reason to feel weird just for being a solo traveler. In fact, it started to be the way how I prefer to travel abroad, to be honest.

Now, let me introduce Ostello Bello Grande near Stazione Centrale. Don’t panic – there is another Ostello Bello in the center of Milan, however, I have visited this one near the train station and I have done a great choice – although the central one is evaluated even better, I absolutely do not regret this choice.

After my arrival at this hostel, I got a free drink – I have picked Cappuccino. Due to my love for Italy, there was no other option for me, although it was already after 1 pm (those who know Italians are probably aware they only drink Cappuccino in the morning, oops – sorry, but I am not Italian and I do not regret my choice).

I have picked the mixed 4-Bed Dormitory room with a half pension, which was very practical for me. Some of you may think it is a pity to have breakfast and even dinner in the hostel when there is a lot of great restaurants and cafés in Milan, but I have done this trip in saving mode, so lets consider it this way.  You can definitely choose breakfast only, no worries. Both – breakfast and dinner were sufficient, I was very surprised at the dinner as it was classic Italian food (pasta, lasagna, pizza, etc.), very tasty, I did not miss anything and as a plus, I have met interesting people during enjoying the dinner.

When I am talking about saving mode – the accommodation itself was not such cheap, especially when there were breakfast and dinner included, the room had a private bathroom as well, so no wonder. Still, I had the feeling the price absolutely fits the service, comfort, and meal I have received during my stay. I did not regret the money spend on this accommodation, I assure you.

I have not taken my laptop with me and in case of need, they borrow me theirs – I have to admit this is a great service and each hostel should offer this option.

Breakfast, as well as dinner, was sufficient and tasty, as Italy always offer. I did not have any problem during my whole stay and the location becomes very convenient due to my later trip to Bologna.

In relation to the bed and comfort – there was nothing to be pointed out – beds were very comfy, there was plenty of space to store luggage and keep them safe.

What was a big plus – as it is near Stazione Centrale, you only do few steps to get to the train station – so if you are tired of discovering Milan, you can take the train and go e.g. to Bologna, Venice, Verona, Florence – everything is so close!

From this point of view, it is Milan’s very convenient place for starting discovering Italy, even to Rome you can get in 3,5 hours by train! If you are not aware where to find and buy ticket, there is staff in the Stazione Centrale ready to help you buy those in the automat or you can purchase tickets in advance trough e.g. (I recommend buying the tickets in advance as they could be more cheaper – as earlier you buy it, as cheaper they are!).

I have done my trip to Bologna and it definitely worths the price. So at one weekend only I have discovered Milan and Bologna, realized how fantastic trains Italy offers and started to plan another trip to Pisa and Florence.

Top 7 Milan hostels
Milano is a city worth to visit – if you are a shopping maniac or like to see some interesting building (my favorite is the building Stazione Centrale and the Duomo of course – I recommend to go to the roof of Duomo as there is a fantastic view and so interesting architecture and it is not even expensive.
Although is Milano not my favorite Italian city (my personal best is Rome and Florence), I am happy to have this experience, which gives me so much – at least I got the courage for solo traveling, become independent, and feel that I am capable to find really great accomodation – I just need to follow my intuition.
I wish you a great time if you plan to go to Milan, hopefully, my list will help you to choose some great hostel for your stay and if so, I am looking forward to your personal feeling about how you enjoyed it!
Thank you for visiting!
Bye Renata

  1. Milan has always been a fascinating city to me and hopefully I will be able to explore it and also some other cities in Italy. I like the outlay of the city and the Italian culture generally and the richness of it. Though I would actually want to explore the place as a tourist. Hence it would be perfect to stay in a hostel alongside pals. Thanks for giving this list but I will be trusting your personal experience here in the Ostello Bello Grande – Milan – Stazione Centrale.

    1. Hello and thank you for your kind comment, it is always great to hear from you!

We are on the same page in relation to Italian culture, I love it so much. Milan is a very strategic location also from the point of traveling north, south and east to the neighbor cities so you don’t need to stay in Milan during the whole visit – and the Italian railway excite me, each time!

I would definitely recommend Ostello Bello Grande as it is a fantastic place, if I ever go back to Milan, I would go there again, although there is a lot of other fantastic hostels, I felt in love with this one.

Thank you and have a great time!

      Bye Renata

  2. Wow, you did a great job. Me and my wife want to make next year in January a city break for 2 days in Milan. We bought the fly tickets but we didn’t find a good place where to stay.

The Madama Hostel & Bistrot is would be perfect for us. This atmosphere of recyclable materials gives us the feeling that this planet is not dead and we can save it. There is a  very confident reason to go there with this ratings (9,2).

The price is just perfect for us, considering that Milan is the city of fashion.

Thanks a lot and keep in touch.

  3. It’s been a while since I stayed in a hostel, but oh boy, do I feel I’m missing out after reading your post! I go to Milan often, since there are always some good concerts going on (well, shopping too), and now I know I will trade my usual apartment renting for some nice hostel. Being claustrophobic, I will have to say ‘’pass’’ to the Ostelzz at the station. But for others, how can I possibly decide? I guess I’ll try them all out and let you know which one was my favorite!

    1. Hello Katja!

Nice to hear from you, hopefully, you will share your experience after trying some nice hostel in Milan so we can hear your opinion. It is sometimes nice to switch the accomodation type and enjoy something different, so it is nice you are open to trying another kind of accommodation!

  4. Its really interesting to have a vital information as this at your disposal, it will be of great help to people willing to visit Milan for a similar purpose as yours or not even related. I’ve been there twice but it was both to visit a friend, first when he was getting married and the other one is just a mere visit, I and my wife stayed in an hotel. I’ll share this to some other platforms so that people can use it.

We are happy to show some great accomodation possibilities to consider when visiting Milan. We also understand some people prefer to stay in a hotel instead of hostel. For me, as a single traveler is simply better and cheaper to share the room with other travelers, which makes always feel great as I love to meet people from all around the world.

      Wish you a great time!

In 2018, I once visited  in Milan, Italy. The problem I encountered then was the hostel problem. At that time I did not understand what hostel I would be staying in and I could not find a better hostel. Then I called a friend of mine, That friend of mine lives in Italy. He gave me the address of a hostel and I went there. I mean the name of that hostel – Ostello Bello Grande – Milan..  When I stayed at this hostel I loved their service and I did not experience any problems.

Their services and facilities are top-notch. The young and friendly staff at the 24-hour reception have lots of insightful tips, and are knowledgeable about events around the city. The hostel’s main draw is its buzzing bar, and it attracts not only travellers but scores of locals too, who also come for the fun vibe, affordable aperitivo, and lively events and music.

  11. You really have eyes and taste for good things. You made beautiful choices regarding ho(s)tels to consider when traveling to Milan. Well, it would have never been an easy task to search for the best when traveling out to a place that I have not gone to before, so I want to say thank you for this information.

The truth is I love these hostels and hotels but my favourite amongst them is #2 and #3 but I will go for #3 because of the free WiFi offered because I need to be online regularly. Seems like #2 does not offer free WiFi but I can borrow a laptop.

Hey, I am a blogger that’s why I made those choices.
